4 Stars **** from Doody’s
These three volumes are highly valuable for anyone in a field that treats victims of sexual assault or violence. They are comprehensive with up-to-date literature references. Contributors are from varied fields and provide a good range of perspectives.
This volume discusses a variety of topics pertaining to sexual violence. The first few chapters function as an introduction to sexual assault and its impact on society. Several subsequent chapters pertain to evidence collection, testifying, and prehospital care, and provide overviews of the medical exam. This first volume presents quite a bit of material and some of it is covered in greater depth in the two subsequent volumes. There are quite a few full color pictures, which are invaluable for discussions of the medical exam. I especially like the discussion of SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) program development and its impact, as this is not discussed in all books on this topic.

Amy Stoesz, MD
Regions Hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center

One author highlights the complex need for understanding the cultural background and semantic/linguistic nuances essential to a compassionate approach to sexual assault victims. Others emphasize the critical importance of a thoughtful, trauma-informed approach to the victim, underscored by a core principle–“start by believing.”–which may be the key to safe disclosure, participation in a medical forensic evaluation, and cooperation with investigation and prosecution, all of which enhances the likelihood of justice for victims.
