The Expanding Continuum of Gender-Based Violence: Trauma-Informed Care, Volume 1

Paul Thomas Clements is a forensic psychiatric clinical specialist, a Certified Gang Specialist, and is Certified in the Danger Assessment. Practicing in the forensic nursing arena for over 30 years, Dr. Clements has provided consultation for hospital systems, EMTs, Child Protective Agency personnel, trauma/emergency nurses, psychiatric providers, and academic and corporate settings—each regarding vulnerability risk assessment, target-hardening, and decreasing the incidence of violence. Dr. Clements has provided consultation to public school systems and other child-related agencies related to child abuse assessment, and related to the aftermath of violence and/or violent death (including homicide of a child and gang-related deaths) for teachers and other classmates. Clements holds a Master’s degree in Child and Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing and a Doctor of Philosophy in Forensic Psychiatric Nursing, both from the University of Pennsylvania, with research and practice that have surrounded the traumatic presentations and behaviors of children exposed to the homicide of a family member. Clements was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow in the International Association of Forensic Nurses in 2002, and was an inaugural Associate Editor of the Journal of Forensic Nursing from 2005-2012. Most recently, in 2021, he was inducted as the first Distinguished Fellow of the Academy of Forensic Nursing. Clements works as a Clinical Professor at the Center of Excellence in Forensic Nursing at Texas A & M University.

David Solomon is an associate professor of psychology and the current director of the clinical psychology track of Western Carolina University’s Psychology MA program. He has multiple years of clinical experience working with children impacted by child maltreatment and other traumas through the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center,  Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center and Community Outreach Program — Esperanza (COPE) in Charleston, South Carolina, the Center for Children, Families, and Communities, and Shelterhouse of Midland and Gladwin Counties in Michigan. David focuses on exposing his students to evidence-based techniques, such as trauma-focused CBT and parent-child interact therapy, and his goal is to extend the reach of such treatments to underserved families.

Kaleigh Mancha has served as a full spectrum birth worker & Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist for almost 15 years, specializing in perinatal & postpartum mental health conditions, reproductive experiences, medical trauma, and complex PTSD. She has been a certified yoga teacher for 10 years and currently oversees all yoga programming and mentorship of teachers at Yoga Haven as their Program Director.

Additionally, Kaleigh co-founded Heart & Sol Collective in 2020, a queer & BIPoC founded and led nonprofit that provides accessible and culturally responsive services to address maternal health disparities in the Las Vegas community. As a result of her passion for community, she enjoys providing mentorship for BIPoC perinatal professionals and creating trauma-informed programming. Programming she has created and facilitated include trauma-informed courses for perinatal professionals through UNLV’s School of Nursing, a community stewardship training for wellness professionals in partnership with Yoga Haven and a trauma-informed doula training housed at Heart & Sol Collective.

Mitzy D. Flores is Executive Director of Simulation and Experiential Learning at the University of South Florida. Her leadership extends to both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, and expands to its three sister campuses. Her clinical background includes nurse supervisor of acute care clinics and other out-patient community clinic settings.

Mitzy practices and is certified as an Advanced Holistic Nurse, AHN-BC, and is an alumni of Theorist Dr. Jean Watson, School of Caring Sciences. As such she is certified and practices as a Caritas Coach. Additionally, she is certified as an End-of-Life Educator, and End of Life Doula, via the Conscious Dying Institute.

Her leadership experiences in the clinical setting serve as a strong foundation for her leadership abilities in program development at the local, national, and international level. As a previous Director of Continuing Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, she is no stranger to interprofessional and collaborative healthcare initiatives. The use of experiential and simulation learning has been at the forefront of Mitzy’s teaching philosophy when enhancing nursing education. As a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE), experienced debriefer, and expert simulation case writer, she has been instrumental to various simulation centers wanting to broaden their horizons.

On her down time, she loves to explore and play in nature. Her adult children are attending grad school in multiple states across the Pacific Northwest.

Christopher A. Mallett, Professor of Social Work, teaches delinquency, research methods, and statistics graduate and undergraduate courses at Cleveland State University. Dr. Mallett is licensed in Ohio as a social worker and attorney and has a 25-year history of working with, advocating for, and representing vulnerable adolescents and their families. His research focuses on juvenile delinquency, incarceration, and school pathways to the juvenile justice system and the impact of trauma, mental health issues, and special education (learning) disabilities. Of significant concern is the disparate impact on students of color and young people who identify as LGBTQIA+. As a consultant whose expertise is utilized nationally by juvenile and family courts, school districts, and children’s service agencies, Dr. Mallett has published 4 books and more than 80 research papers, book chapters, and technical assistance training briefs on these topics.
