Recognizing Dr. Mary E. Case
This week, renowned professional in forensic pathology Dr. Mary E. Case has stepped down from her post as St. Louis County’s chief medical examiner. While Case originally attended university to become a neurosurgeon, she began working in the pathology department, which completely changed the trajectory of her life.
Forensic Pathology Expert
Case graduated in 1969 from St. Louis University School of Medicine with training in pathology and is board certified in anatomical pathology, neuropathology, and forensic pathology.
While her primary practice is forensic pathology, she has provided expert testimony in legal cases and given lectures on child deaths related to maltreatment, abusive head trauma, and shaken baby syndrome. She has also published several books on these topics with STM Learning, Inc. including:
Changing the System
A “legend” in her field, Case has been a part of some of the county’s largest murder investigations and has continually bettered the field of forensic death investigation. In the 80s, she broke barriers by becoming one of the first forensic pathologists to be a medical examiner in the county and was quickly promoted to chief medical examiner for St. Louis County in 1988. Case also played a significant part in changing Missouri’s child death review process which is now considered one of the best in the country. There is now a mandated investigation for all child deaths in the state.
Thankfully, Case is not leaving entirely; instead, she will continue to work part time for St. Louis County.
